The Texas Hill Country and Texas High Plains AVAs

The Texas Hill Country AVA is known for a recognizable combination of limestone and granite soils, which along with the hot, dry climate creates a unique growing environment with distinct flavors including terroir, that can’t be replicated elsewhere.  Some stand-out varietals that thrive in the region are Tempranillo, Touriga, Mourvèdre, Tannat, and Viognier.

The Texas High Plains AVA is located on the Llano Estacado plateau in northwest Texas where the elevation is 3,000 to 4,000 feet above sea level.  The soil is primarily sandy loam and caliche.  This region currently produces 85-90% of Texas wine grapes.  The wide variety of grapes produced includes:

      White Red
      Albariño
      Chardonnay
      Marsanne
      Picpoul Blanc
      Roussanne
      Vermentino
      Viognier
      Cabernet Sauvignon
      Malbec
      Mourvèdre
      Sangiovese
